Artist Statement/Biography
Joanie San Chirico is a full time studio artist with an extensive exhibition record. Her work is held in numerous public and private collections in the US and Europe. Joanie is at work on two series, Artifacts and Environmental. In her Artifacts series, she integrates her love of the stitch with her fascination with the past. The objective is to make modern abstract art using ancient imagery. The intention is to use this juxtaposition of ancient/modern to reflect on the past in an attempt to make sense of the future.
The Environmental series showcases natural surfaces using beautiful imagery to remind the viewer of what could potentially be lost.
She uses various pigments, dyes, stitching and manipulation of cloth, paper and paint to achieve the illusion of a natural patina. Her atrium sculptures and commissioned wall mounted pieces are site-specific and inspired by the environment and the area surrounding the installation. She works closely with architects, designers and developers.
In addition to commissions and exhibitions, Joanie is an independent curator who has created exhibits of contemporary fiber art in New Jersey, Texas and New York City.
